DURATION: 5H 30 MIN - GRADIENT 450M

Located in the south western region of Lanzarote, Los Ajaches is a big volcanic formation which takes up the southern part of the island with a mountain range in an area of leeward winds and stony windward flat areas. The municipality of Yaiza is home to an important archaeological heritage with caves, etchings and remains of former farming. This area, the oldest on the island, still undergoes major wearing away due to erosion which in the last ten million years has carved out the ravines which go through this natural route in Lanzarote.

Canary Island Spurge and brushwood on an arid trek.
This six kilometre route, with a notable incline which makes the Los Ajaches walk more difficult, starts in the village of Femés and goes along pathways, tracks, pedestrian ways and roads. These natural surrounds give us the chance to see arid bushwood vegetation and also Canary Island Spurge in the more sheltered areas. The animal life includes steppe birds, birds of prey and sea birds on the coastal cliffs. Remember to wear suitable footwear and take food and liquids.

TREKKING ROUTE 3 - CAMINO DE LOS GRACIOCEROS

An ancient route linking La Graciosa with Lanzarote

caminolosgracioseros-022.jpg

This trekking route goes along the path that inhabitants of La Graciosa took to go back and forth to Lanzarote. This four kilometre route of average to high difficulty, depending on whether it is uphill or downhill, goes along the cliffs of Famara, in the north, with the island of La Graciosa across the Río. The trek along volcanic rocks is somewhat slippery at times and ends at sea level. As a reward after the hike, a swim in the blue waters of the Río is a must.

A downhill trek among native flora and fauna

To start this trek, it is necessary to take the road towards Mirador del Rio, which is on the outskirts of Yé on the way to Guinate. It is a delightful walk with splendid views of the coastal area of Lanzarote; the first stretch on the outskirts of Yé towards Guinate is along cobbled paths and descends in zigzag. As well as the enjoyable walk, this route lets us contemplate the important fauna and flora of the area which has several protected native species.
